titling and tenure security

millions of Indians lack a clear title to their land or house. clear titles can unlock potential value of the property and enable means to livelihoods, improve quality of life and social justice. in the absence of tenure security, the poor face the risk of litigation, even eviction, further aggravating their poverty.
if you have an innovative model to educate low-income, marginalized or tribal communities of the importance of ownership/tenancy records, and to assist in securing their rights, we encourage you to apply.

open data solutions

the opaque nature of land administration systems, inaccurate property records and absence of updated maps are the root cause for corruption and malpractices like ‘land grabbing’ and illegal encroachment. this adversely impacts the most vulnerable sections of society. it is thus critical to have data transparency that allows fair and accountable land use and allocation.
organisations working in capturing and publishing open map or titling data can reduce information asymmetry, and bridge the gap between policy and implementation.

women and property rights

notwithstanding the repeated and strong Constitutional guarantees of equality to women, the property rights of Indian women are far from gender-just even today. the challenges are many: social acceptance of women’s rights in property, womens’ own awareness of their rights, and their ability to claim and secure their inheritance or ownership, are some of them.
we are looking for individuals with ideas that work towards empowering women through awareness, knowledge and access to property.

legal aid, awareness and dispute resolution

land-related disputes account for two-thirds of all pending court cases in the country. in India, land disputes on average take about 20 years to be resolved. this adds to the burden of the courts and economic strain on vulnerable communities and individuals.
we are looking for early stage organisations with innovative models to help resolve land and property related conflicts through legal empowerment, and strengthen mechanisms for accountable and participatory management of land and natural resource.

access to welfare and financial services

several government schemes such as farm input subsidies and crop insurance are disbursed on the basis of land ownership or tenancy records. similarly, in urban areas, there are schemes for home improvements, that can only be accessed with formal property documents. it has been observed that disputed or unclear land titles inhibit supply of capital and credit for the owner.
